Magazine Stock Calculator

This calculator allows you to estimate the working capital you have tied up in your newspaper and magazine category and the profit return on that investment you achieve.

The inputs have been designed to allow you to read off your weekly supply invoices the amount you are being billed for a new supply of magazines and newspapers. In addition, please enter how much of the magazine bill is for weekly's and how much of the newspaper bill is for home delivery. Finally, enter your carriage service charge and press ‘Calculate’.

Notes on the calculator:

  • Values entered should relate to one week’s supply
  • The share of magazine bill for weeklies should be entered as a share of value not supply volume
  • The share of newspaper bill for HND (home news delivery) should be entered as a share of value not supply volume
  • ‘Cash tied up’ estimates the working capital required in order to receive supply, and originates from the need to pay for supply some time before credit for returns is received
  • ‘Annual gross profit X cash tied up’ is an estimate of the retail margin over a whole year, divided by the cash tied up
  • Typical retailer margins, sales efficiencies, cover prices and payment terms have been used in the calculations
  • The calculator has been created by ANR in association with Oxford Indices, a specialist in news distribution analytics.
