With convenience stores dependence on footfall and passing trade road works can cause considerable damage to the profit margins of a business. Communications:

  • All enquiries regarding roadworks on local roads should be through your local councils planning or environment department.
  • Information on Trunk roads and Motorways should be sought from the Highways agency.

Information:

  • Notice of roadworks directly affecting your business should come directly to you via the post.
  • Notice of roadworks in your area will be displayed on the local authority website, local media and advanced warnings signs on the road.
  • The Electronic Government Information Network provides information on road works in certain county councils. You can see if your council is included here: http://www.elgin.gov.uk/ .

Compensation:

  • Collect as much evidence as possible to support any future case.
  • Contact your local authority for details the forms to submit a claim to your local valuations office.
  • Contact utility companies about compensation procedure and their roadworks permit.

 

Parking Summary

Communications:

  • For parking enforcement, i.e. penalty notices, you should contact the parking team.
  • Implementations of any new traffic restrictions or changes to current ones are handled by the Traffic Management Team.

Information:

  • Local authorities will contact you directly if any parking restrictions will affect your store.
  • Look out for Traffic Regulation Orders in the local press and on your local authority website. Members of the public must be consulted.
  • Drop curbs will be dealt with by your local authorities traffic management and planning departments.
